Although I arrived too late at the Ghazini Learning Center Tuesday to see inside the classrooms, I do think their library area was conducive to small group discussions, and one-on-one guidance. The big open windows allowed students to not feel like they were imprisoned, but gave a sense of freedom. I noticed there were many books on the shelves students could check out or use, and there was life-skills signage around the room. Perhaps a group reading and book discussion could be an activity for students attending in that space.
I stopped by the Palmer-Munroe Teen Center at 4:30 PM on Tuesday and watched students playing video games, ping pong and basketball. I met the Director, Becky, and talked about how the tutoring would work. She said she would like us to start as soon as possible since they already had students who needed help now after school. Sarah arrived and Becky walked us to the tutoring room so we could see the space. It was arranged comfortably with a computers on one wall, but a couch and chairs around the rom with pillows to give more of a living room feel. The hours at Palmer-Munroe fit my work schedule best, so I will plan to tutor there in the late afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
I also saw a sign on the Palmer-Munroe check-in desk saying they were planning a documentary class later in the Summer, which I might want to help with also.
