Some literacy practices that I am looking at for my midterm are:
1. Understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings 2. Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. 3. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
These practices come from the 7th grade English Language Arts standards. These are the skills that I want students to walk away with.

Jen and I discussed these literacy practices in class: - Literary analysis? (I don't remember where this one was heading) - "Reading in a particular way", Being able to read different kinds of texts - Re-ification, making things, ideas, or roles real for a student This list is from the NCTE Definition of 21st Century Literacies: - Develop proficiency and fluency with the tools of technology; - Build intentional cross-cultural connections and relationships with others so to pose and solve problems collaboratively and strengthen independent thought; - Design and share information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes; - Manage, analyze, and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information; - Create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multimedia texts; - Attend to the ethical responsibilities required by these complex environments. I also liked this quote from Common's Core's English Language Arts Standards page: "The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence collection skills that are essential for success in college, career, and life. The standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21st century."

I really appreciate the way Jennifer has laid out her plan to approach her Midterm on Literacy Practices to meet the 7th grade language arts standards. This helps me in deciding how to organize my Content Area Unit plan, even though it is a different grade level from the Science standards. This same format will work along with hands on projects in the lessons.
Angelica's thoughts and suggested links give a lot more to use in creating greater depth in our final projects. Thank you, Angelica for the list from NCTE Definition of 21st Century Literacies. I look forward to using these as a guide in my own final project and will share my outline with you in the near future for your input.-Kathy
